The short answer

Moonbreon is the nickname for the alternate art Umbreon VMAX, card 215/203 from Evolving Skies (2021), where Umbreon reaches up toward a full moon. In late October 2026 a near-mint raw copy sells for about $1,850, a PSA 9 for about $2,000 and a PSA 10 for about $3,750, so only a 10 adds real money.

Moonbreon is the card most modern collectors want and the one most of them check prices on every week. It’s also the card counterfeiters copy most eagerly, and one where grading only pays if you land the top grade. This guide covers what it is, what it sells for raw and graded right now, how many PSA 10s are out there, how to tell a real one from a fake, and how to decide whether your raw copy is worth sending in.

What is a Moonbreon?

A Moonbreon is the alternate art Umbreon VMAX from the English Evolving Skies set, card 215/203. Collectors named it after the art: Umbreon, Dynamaxed and perched on top of a tower, stretching a paw toward a huge full moon. Keiichiro Ito illustrated it.

The Japanese Eevee Heroes copy has the same art and is a genuine card, not a fake; it just carries a different number. If you’re weighing the two, the guide to Japanese Pokémon cards compares them. The Umbreon ex 161/131 from Prismatic Evolutions (January 2025), with Umbreon sitting in front of a full moon, is a different card that nods to this one, not a reprint.

How much is a Moonbreon worth?

About $1,850 for a near-mint raw copy, about $2,000 in PSA 9 and about $3,750 in PSA 10, based on sales from 21 to 24 October 2026. A PSA 9 sells for little more than raw, so the grade that changes the price is the 10.

  • Raw, near mintRecent sales $1,976 (Oct 22), $1,850 (Oct 23), $2,500 (Oct 24)$1,850

Raw = near-mint sales on TCGplayer and Sports Card Investor’s raw near-mint feed. Graded = eBay sales collected by Sports Card Investor; PSA 10 typical price is its last-14-sales average of $3,780. Checked 25 October 2026, rounded.

TCGplayer’s market price was $2,237 on 25 October, above most of that week’s near-mint sales. One near-mint sale on 23 October went through at $695, far below every other sale; treat oddities like that as noise, not the price. Prices also drift: Sports Card Investor had PSA 10 sales down 10.4% over the last 30 days and PSA 9 down 4.8%. Other graders sell for less. A CGC 10 sold for $1,742 on 15 October and $2,180 on 7 October, which is closer to a raw copy than to a PSA 10. For the basics of pricing any card, see how much is my Pokémon card worth.

How rare is the Moonbreon card?

It’s hard to pull but not scarce. It’s a secret rare from a heavily printed set, The Pokémon Company doesn’t publish pull rates, and tens of thousands of copies have already been graded, most of them PSA 10s.

  • PSA 10Most common grade21,835
  • PSA 96,581
  • PSA 81,675
  • PSA 7545

PSA population for Umbreon VMAX 215/203 as shown by TCG Charts, 25 October 2026. PSA’s own pop report asked for a sign-in, so we couldn’t check it there directly.

That’s 69% PSA 10s among those whole grades, the gem rate TCG Charts shows. Its total of 39,722 copies graded includes copies outside those rows, and against that total the share is still about 55%. Either way, more Moonbreons have a PSA 10 than every other grade put together. That’s why the 10 is “only” about twice the raw price: buyers know there are thousands of them. Compare that with the Japanese Eevee Heroes copy, where TCG Charts shows 7,750 PSA 10s. The PSA population report guide explains how to read these numbers for any card.

A high gem rate doesn’t mean your copy will get a 10. People mostly send in copies that look perfect, straight from the pack. A raw Moonbreon for sale today has often been looked at and passed over by someone who decided it wouldn’t make the grade.

How do you tell if a Moonbreon is fake?

Compare it, detail by detail, with the official scan of card 215/203, then check the texture and do a light test next to a genuine card from the same era. Copies are easy to find: a Google search for “moonbreon” on 25 October 2026 showed an Etsy listing for an Umbreon VMAX “proxy” at $9.99.

  1. Check the number and bottom line. It must read 215/203 with a small star beside it, an E regulation mark in a box, “illus. KEIICHIRO ITO” and “©2021 Pokémon / Nintendo / Creatures / GAME FREAK”. Wrong years and missing marks are common slips.
  2. Read the card text. 310 HP, the Dark Signal ability and Max Darkness for 160, with a Darkness and two Colorless energy symbols. Fakes often get the font, spacing or energy symbol sizes wrong.
  3. Feel the surface. Genuine VMAX alternate arts have fine raised lines pressed into the surface that you can feel with a fingertip. Most fakes are smooth and glossy, or have a texture printed on as a flat picture.
  4. Tilt it under one lamp. The foil on a real copy moves in a set pattern across the art. Cheap fakes use a rainbow film that shimmers the same way over the whole card, or none at all.
  5. Check the back and do a light test. The blue back should match a genuine modern card exactly. Hold both cards a couple of inches above a phone flashlight; a card that lets far more light through is suspect.
  6. Check the price and the seller. A raw near-mint copy sells for around $1,800 to $2,000. One offered for a few hundred dollars is almost always fake, damaged or a scam.

No single check proves a card is real. The better fakes copy the art closely and pass a quick glance, so a card has to pass all of them. The full method, with the rip test you shouldn’t do, is in how to tell if a Pokémon card is fake, and Buddy’s fake check runs the comparison for you.

Is it worth grading a raw Moonbreon?

Only if you believe it has a solid chance at a PSA 10. Because a PSA 9 sells for about the raw price, a 9 loses you the grading fee and shipping, and a 10 is the only result that pays.

Here’s the sum for a copy you already own. A PSA 10 at $3,750 has to be declared at that value, which is over Express’s $2,500 limit, so it goes in Super Express at $349 (PSA’s Value tiers were paused on 25 October 2026). We assume about $75 for insured shipping both ways; your quote will differ. eBay takes 13.25% plus $0.40 per order on trading cards.

  • PSA 10After eBay fees $3,253 · After grading and shipping $2,829$3,750
  • PSA 9After eBay fees $1,735 · After grading and shipping $1,311$2,000
  • PSA 8After eBay fees $1,539 · After grading and shipping $1,115$1,775

Selling a Moonbreon you own, using the October 2026 prices above. PSA Super Express $349 plus about $75 shipping. eBay fee 13.25% + $0.40.

If every miss is a PSA 9, you need about a 19% chance of a 10 to break even. If a miss is more likely an 8, you need about 29%. A 9 leaves you about $290 worse off than selling raw today, an 8 about $490. The full method, with other cards, is in is it worth grading Pokémon cards, and every PSA fee is in PSA grading cost.

Check the centering first

On a card that went straight from pack to sleeve, the flaw you can’t fix or hide is centering, so check it before anything else. PSA’s 10 allows about 55/45 on the front and 75/25 on the back; a 9 allows 60/40 and 90/10.

  1. Compare the left and right borders on the front. At 55/45 the wider border is no more than about 1.2 times the narrower one. If you can see the difference at arm’s length, it’s probably past 60/40, which rules out a 10.
  2. Do the same top to bottom. The tolerance applies to both directions, and the worse of the two counts.
  3. Turn it over and check the back. 75/25 is generous: the wider blue border can be up to three times the narrower before a 10 is off the table.
  4. Then the back edges and corners. The dark blue back shows white specks and soft corners that the busy front art hides. One speck can be the difference between a 10 and a 9.

Measuring borders by eye is harder than it sounds, especially on a full-art card. The Pokémon card centering guide shows how to measure it properly, and PSA 9 vs PSA 10 covers what separates the two grades.

What about buying a raw copy to grade?

The bar is higher, because you pay the raw price up front instead of giving up a sale. Buy at $1,850 and grade for about $424, and you’re in for about $2,274.

PSA 10 nets $3,253 after fees+$979

PSA 8 nets $1,539 after fees−$735

That 36% assumes every miss is a 9; if misses are 8s it’s about 43%. Buying a raw copy you can only see in a seller’s photos makes those odds harder to judge, and you can’t check centering properly through a phone screen. If you want a PSA 10 Moonbreon to keep, buying one already graded is often the cheaper, surer route.

Is Moonbreon a good investment?

Nobody can tell you where its price goes next, and we won’t try. What the numbers show is a card that’s popular and expensive but not scarce in high grade, and one whose price has been falling over the last month.

  • Over the 30 days to 25 October 2026, Sports Card Investor had PSA 10 sales down 10.4%, PSA 9 down 4.8% and lightly played raw copies down 12.5%.
  • PSA had graded 21,835 copies a 10 by TCG Charts’ count, and that number rises with every submission.
  • Newer Umbreon chase cards compete for the same buyers, including the Prismatic Evolutions Umbreon ex from 2025.
  • Every sale costs about 13% in fees, so a card has to rise a fair way before a resale breaks even.

If you’re buying because you love the card, that’s reason enough; buy the copy you’ll enjoy owning. If you’re buying to make money, read are Pokémon cards a good investment first. This is general information, not financial advice.

Questions people ask

Why is it called Moonbreon?

Because of the art. Collectors combined “moon” and “Umbreon” for the alternate art Umbreon VMAX 215/203 from Evolving Skies, which shows Umbreon on top of a tower reaching for a giant full moon.

How much is a Moonbreon PSA 10 worth?

About $3,750 in late October 2026. Sports Card Investor’s average of the last 14 PSA 10 sales was $3,780 on 25 October, down about 10% over the previous 30 days.

What set is Moonbreon from?

Sword & Shield: Evolving Skies, released in English on 27 August 2021. The same art appeared three months earlier in Japan as card 095/069 in Eevee Heroes.

Is the Prismatic Evolutions Umbreon a Moonbreon reprint?

No. The Umbreon ex 161/131 from Prismatic Evolutions is a new special illustration rare with a different picture of Umbreon in front of a full moon. The original 215/203 has not been reprinted.

What are the odds of pulling a Moonbreon?

The Pokémon Company doesn’t publish pull rates, and the estimates around online are community guesses. It is a secret rare, and the set’s alternate arts are known as very hard pulls, so buying the single is far cheaper than chasing it in packs.

Is a CGC 10 Moonbreon worth as much as a PSA 10?

No. In October 2026 CGC 10 copies sold for about $1,750 to $2,200, close to raw prices, while PSA 10s sold for about $3,750. Buyers of this card pay most for the PSA label.
