The short answer

A PSA 9 is a Mint card with one minor flaw; a PSA 10 is Gem Mint with none. On modern Pokémon cards a 10 sold for about 2 to 4 times a 9 in October 2026, and a 9 for little more than raw. On vintage holos the gap ran 7 to 11 times, because so few 10s exist.

Every collector who has sent cards to PSA knows the feeling: the card looked perfect, the slab says 9, and the 10 you had in mind is worth several times as much. How much more depends hugely on the card. This guide puts real numbers on the gap for eight well-known cards from 1999 to 2025, explains why it ranges from under 2× to over 10×, and works through what that means for buying a 9 and for grading your own cards. The prices are what each grade was selling for on 25 October 2026. They move every week, so treat them as a snapshot.

What’s the difference between a PSA 9 and a PSA 10?

One flaw. PSA’s 9 (Mint) allows exactly one minor fault, such as a very slight wax stain on the back, a minor printing flaw or slightly off-white borders, while its 10 (Gem Mint) needs four perfectly sharp corners, full original gloss, no staining and tighter centering.

Centering is the line you can measure. A 10 needs 55/45 or better on the front and 75/25 on the back; a 9 allows 60/40 on the front and 90/10 on the back. When a card that looked perfect comes back a 9, the reason is nearly always one of four things:

  • A white speck on a back corner or edge. The dark blue Pokémon back shows the tiniest bit of whitening that the front hides.
  • Front centering between 55/45 and 60/40. Close enough to look fine at arm’s length, too far off for a 10.
  • A faint print line or scratch on the holo. Visible only when you tilt the card under one bright light.
  • A soft corner tip. Not rounded, just not knife-sharp under a loupe.

The full grade definitions, every centering limit and the qualifiers like OC are in our PSA grading scale guide, and how to measure centering shows how to check the borders yourself. This guide is about the money.

How much more is a PSA 10 worth than a PSA 9?

Anywhere from under 2× to over 10×, depending mostly on how rare 10s are. On the eight cards below, the PSA 10 sold for between 1.8 and 10.9 times the PSA 9.

Ranked by how many times a PSA 10 sells for over a PSA 9. Raw, PSA 8, 9 and 10 are TCG Charts’ current values for each grade, built from recent eBay, Fanatics Collect and ALT sales, checked 25 October 2026. Raw means any ungraded copy. Rounded.

Two patterns jump out. On the vintage cards, every grade is worth well over raw and the 10 is in a different league. On the modern cards, PSA 8 and 9 sell for about what a raw copy does, sometimes less: a PSA 8 of the 151 Charizard was worth $270 against $307 raw, and a PSA 9 Sunbreon only $25 more than a raw one. For modern cards, the 10 is the only grade that adds real money. More on individual cards in our guides to Moonbreon and Charizard card values.

Raw is less useful on vintage. TCG Charts’ raw value is any ungraded copy, and most 25-year-old Charizards and Blastoises have worn corners and edges. A clean raw copy that could grade 9 is worth far more than the $400 or $86 shown.

Why is the PSA 10 premium so different from card to card?

Mostly because of how rare 10s are. When almost every copy PSA grades comes back a 10, a 10 is the normal grade and the premium is small; when one copy in two hundred does, a 10 is a trophy.

PSA 10 rate = PSA 10s as a share of all copies PSA has graded, from PSA population counts shown on TCG Charts, 25 October 2026. Sorted by PSA 10 rate.

The order barely changes between the two columns. Three things sit behind that.

How many 10s exist

Buyers pay for scarcity, and the population report is where they look it up. PSA has graded more than 100,000 Base Set Charizards and only 489 are 10s. Neo Genesis Lugia is more extreme: 15 PSA 10s, or 0.1% of the copies PSA has graded. TCG Charts lists a $192,000 PSA 10 sale on Fanatics Collect on 23 October 2026 but marks it payment pending, so treat that one as unconfirmed; its PSA 9 value was $4,400. Our PSA population report guide shows how to look up any card’s counts.

Era and print quality

Cards from 1999 to 2002 were printed with looser centering and rougher cutting, then played with, traded and shoved in shoeboxes for twenty years. Modern cards come out of the pack sharper and most chase cards go straight into a sleeve, so 10s are common. That’s why a 9 of a vintage holo is still a hard card to find, while a 9 of a modern hit is just a card that missed.

Demand at the top

Some cards carry a bigger premium than their 10 rate alone would predict. Sunbreon’s 10s are about as common as the 151 Charizard’s, yet its 10 sells for 4× a 9 against 3.7×. Popular chase cards pull in collectors who only want the 10, and that bids the top grade up while the 9 stays near raw.

Is a PSA 9 worth buying?

Often, yes, if you want the card rather than a bet on its price. A PSA 9 gets you a card PSA has checked as genuine and nearly perfect, often for a fraction of a 10 and, on modern cards, for little more than raw.

  • Vintage you want to own. A PSA 9 Base Set Charizard was worth about $3,720 against $40,400 for a 10. The difference between them is one flaw you may need a loupe to find.
  • Modern cards instead of raw. When a 9 costs about the same as raw, as with Sunbreon ($1,175 vs $1,150) or the Champion’s Path Charizard ($155 vs $147), the slab is nearly free and settles any doubt that the card is real.
  • A card for your own collection. If you’ll never sell it, the extra money for a 10 buys only a number.

A 9 makes less sense if you’re hoping to profit. On modern cards the 9 tracks the raw price, so it rarely gains much on its own. Buying 9s to crack out of the slab and resubmit for a 10 means paying the grading fee again, and it can just as easily come back a 9 or lower. Before you buy any slab, check the certificate number with our PSA cert lookup guide.

Should you grade a card that might only get a 9?

On modern cards, only if a 10 is a real chance, because the 9 usually doesn’t cover the grading fee. The question is how often you need a 10 for grading to beat selling raw.

Here’s that break-even for the five modern cards, assuming a miss comes back a 9. Grading cost is PSA’s fee for the tier set by the card’s value as a 10, plus an assumed $40 of shipping both ways ($75 above $2,500). Both the raw sale and the graded sale lose eBay’s 13.25% plus $0.40.

Break-even odds of a PSA 10 for grading to match selling raw, worked out from the TCG Charts prices above (25 October 2026), PSA’s published fees and eBay’s trading card fee. Shipping is an assumption.

Most of these need only a 10 to 15% chance, which a clean, well-centered copy can clear. The Hidden Fates Charizard is the rare modern card whose PSA 9 almost pays for grading on its own. The Champion’s Path Charizard VMAX is the warning: its 9 is worth about raw and its 10 only $299, so the $59.99 Standard fee and postage eat the gain. You’d need about a 74% chance of a 10, better than the 69% PSA actually gives, just to break even.

Vintage flips the logic. When a 9, or even an 8, sells for several times a worn raw copy, a clean card can be worth grading without any hope of a 10. The full method, with the formula and a worked example, is in is it worth grading Pokémon cards, and every PSA tier is in what PSA grading costs.

Is a PSA 8 worth anything?

On vintage, yes; on modern, it’s usually worth less than raw. A PSA 8 (Near Mint-Mint) Base Set Charizard was worth about $1,450, more than three times a typical raw copy, and a PSA 8 Shining Charizard about $5,280.

On modern cards the 8 is a loss. The 151 Charizard’s 8 was worth $270 against $307 raw, and Sunbreon’s about $1,000 against $1,150 raw. Buyers of modern cards assume a pack-fresh copy should grade higher, so an 8 reads as a damaged card in a slab. If a modern card has a flaw you can see, selling it raw is usually the better move; our guide to where to sell Pokémon cards compares the options.

So, PSA 9 or PSA 10?

If you’re buying to own, a PSA 9 is often the best value in the hobby: authenticated, nearly perfect and a fraction of a 10’s price on vintage, roughly raw price on modern. If you’re grading to sell, the 9 is the outcome you have to survive, and on modern cards it rarely pays for the fee. Look up all three prices for your card, check how often PSA hands out 10s, and be honest about the one flaw that might keep yours from one.

Questions people ask

What is a PSA 9 PD?

PD is a PSA qualifier for print defect. It means the card meets the 9 in every way except a printing flaw, such as a print line or ink spot, that is worse than a 9 allows. Most buyers pay less for a qualified 9 than for a plain one.

What does PSA 10 mean?

PSA 10 is Gem Mint, the top grade on PSA’s scale. The card has four perfectly sharp corners, full original gloss, no staining, and centering of 55/45 or better on the front and 75/25 on the back.

Is a PSA 9 better than raw?

It’s authenticated and protected, which a raw card isn’t. On vintage holos a PSA 9 sells for many times a typical raw copy; on modern chase cards it often sells for about the same as raw, which makes it a good way to buy but rarely worth paying to create.

Does PSA grading increase card value?

Only at grades buyers want. A PSA 10 of a popular modern card can sell for three to four times raw, while a modern PSA 8 often sells for less than raw. On vintage cards, most grades from 8 up add value.

Is there a PSA 9.5?

No. PSA’s half grades stop at 8.5, so the step above a 9 is a 10. Beckett, CGC and SGC do give a 9.5.
